Book review – Merrylegs

Merrylegs by Pam Smy

Merrylegs is a horse who feels rather lowly about his pony trekking role, unaware of the joy he brings to the children on his back.

There are a few similarities in this with ‘Sugarlump and the Unicorn’ by Julia Donaldson, but it’s different enough and carries a stronger message to the reader about self belief.

I love the illustrations and the colour pallet used which is often muted like in the cover. Horses can be tricky to draw but Merrylegs and the other characters have been nicely styled.

Like a lot of picture books recently, this book’s ‘message’ is of self belief being the path to happiness, so if you like these kinds os stories then this is definitely a good choice.
