Book review – The Pink Hat

The Pink Hat by Andrew Joyner.

This is a rather different book that is not what it first appears to be. It all starts out normal enough as the titular hat is knitted by an elderly lady which then goes on a bit of a journey before ending up in the possession of a young girl. After that it gets s bit political as the girl joins a women’s march.

It’s meant to educate about the women’s movement and provides a initial catalyst for discussion with your children.

As a book about a hat that gets lost it’s great, but I’m not sure it properly sells such a worthy movement and it all feels a bit tagged on at the end.

The illustrations are great and I love the fact they are in black and white (apart from the pink hat). Black and white is sadly underused these days in my opinion.

Overall, it is a fine and lovely story you should check out, but it’s a difficult thing to integrate political worthiness into a children’s picture book.
